First HNP Encuentro a Success

octubre 28, 2009

Over 600 children, teens, young adults, adults and senior citizens attended Encuentro at St. Camillus Church on Saturday, Oct. 24. At least 15 Franciscan parish/shrine communities were represented, including Paterson, N.J., our newest HNP Hispanic Ministry site, which started six months ago — they are on their luna de miel — honeymoon!

Also, eight additional Franciscan ministries were represented including: Provincial Council; Ministry of the Word Team (Florida); Siena College; Office of Justice, Peace, & Integrity of Creation (Russ Testa); FVM (Franciscan Volunteer Ministries); and the three initial formation sites (Boston — postulants, Wilmington — novices, Holy Name College — simply professed student-friars).

Finally, with us in Spirit, were our missions in Peru. We prayed for them during the day and sent them some Encuentro materials and a Pauline type letter of affirmation & hope.

The most important outcomes of the day include:

Animation: excitement of communities and province to develop passion for the Hispanic communities

Awareness: of the province and our ministry sites of the Hispanic presence and its many blessings

Exchange of tools and resources to:

  • Better connect ethnic and mainstream communities at parishes/shrines on a local level.
  • Better serve Hispanic jovenes, particularly teenagers: even though many Hispanic teens speak English, placing them in the mainstream parish teen youth group may not be the best for all.
  • Share expertise between Hispanic ministry sites: some of the newer sites connected with some of the more developed sites, in order to share resources, engage in consultation, and consider planning future activities such as regional retreats, youth gatherings, and formation. Some of the more established Hispanic ministry sites experience the joy of mission with accompanying/supporting the rookies.
  • Continue the conversation with newly developed blog site and the conversation between diverse friars and lay parish Hispanic ministry coordinators, particularly in topics such as immigration reform, on-going formations, youth & young adult ministry, developing & strengthening Franciscan spirituality in Hispanic communities, retreat planning, information sharing, and regional collaboration.

Holy Name Province and its Hispanic Ministry Committeemap are preparing for “Encuentro Franciscano,” the first event of its kind to celebrate the blessings of the Hispanic presence among Holy Name ministries.

St. Camillus Church in Silver Spring, Md., will host the daylong Oct. 24 event, which in English means “Franciscan encounter.” All HNP ministries are invited to send representatives to the event, which will include speakers, prayer, praise, music, theater, breakout sessions, group reflections, worship and Mass.

“Encuentro Franciscano: Challenges for the Community & Evangelization” will celebrate the blessings of the Hispanic presence in the Province, in an effort to help build bridges of friendship with lay partners.

Two keynote talks headline the 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. event that will also include 12 breakout sessions, many given by friars. Several of the talks and sessions will be presented in both English and Spanish.
